the byrds

image

The Byrds were the first American supergroup. The combination of Roger McGuinn’s ringing 12-string Rickenbacker guitar, Gene Clark’s poetry, David Crosby’s harmonies, Chris Hillman’s bluegrass-influenced bass playing and Michael Clarke’s enthusiastic drumming ushered in a new era of Rock ‘n’ Roll. A music that changed the way we felt and thought and looked at ourselves and each other.

Pianist Sonny Clark enjoyed only a short career as a performing and recording musician. His premature death at age 31 due to drug abuse was a major blow to the Jazz fraternity, but unfortunately incidents like these were not uncommon among Jazz musicians of the 40s 50s and 60s. Sonny Clark’s style as a pianist owed much to Bud Powell and for the duration of his career he has maintained a bop-inspired sound which was much in demand in New York in the mid 50s.

metropolis ( 1925-1926 )

image

The silent classic Metropolis was created in Germany in 1925-26 by the Austrian director Fritz Lang in collaboration with his wife, Thea von Harbou (1888-1954). This science-fiction film, so admired today, was not even a big box-office success in its time and the production costs almost put the Ufa film studios out of business. But Fritz Lang’s Metropolis continues to fascinate viewers today, and for over seven decades it has influenced Hollywood and world cinema — from music videos to films such as Blade Runner and Robocop. Lang himself went to Hollywood in 1933, where he continued to work until 1956.

“The greatest compliment I was ever given came at The Fillmore. It was Cream and the Butterfield Blues Band. I just happened to go into the rest room during a break. I was standing at the middle urinal when two guys came in after me, one on either side…right out of the blue, one said, ‘I forgot. Who’s playing here tonight?’ Without batting an eyelash, the other guy said, ‘I don’t know, man. What’s the difference? It’s The Fillmore.” -Bill Graham

Alfred Hitchcock (USA, 1954 ) 112 min
