black mask

Black Mask was a pulp magazine launched in April 1920 by H. L. Mencken and George Jean Nathan to support the loss-making but prestigious literary magazine Smart Set. Mencken was a well-known literary journalist and sometime poet; Nathan a drama critic. Credited as having the best talent writing for a detective pulp, Black Mask included Erle Stanley Gardner, Lester Dent, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Norbert Davis, Frederick Davis and more.
